Clothes play a critical role in the conclusions we reach by providing clues to whopeople are, who they are not, and who they would like to be. They tell us a good dealabout the wearer's background, personality, status, mood and outlook.

Since clothes are such an important source of social information,we can usethem to win people ’ s good impression. Our appearance assumes particularsignificance at the beginning of communication. For example, a middle-class personin plain clothes may be alienated(使疏远)by a young adult who is dressed in anunconventional manner, regardless of the person’s education, background or interest.

People tend to agree on what certain types of clothes mean. Adolescent girls caneasily agree on the lifestyle of the girls who wear fancy clothes. Newscasters or theannouncers who read the news on TV, are considered to be more convincing, honestand competent when they are dressed conservatively. And college students who viewthemselves as playing an active role in their interpersonal relationships say they areconcerned about the costumes they must wear to play these roles successfully. Moreover, many of us can be aware that the clothing we wear changes the way wefeel about ourselves and how we act. Perhaps you have used clothing to gainconfidence when you are in a stressful situation, such as a job interview,or anappearance in court.

In the workplace, the appearances of men and women are equally important, especially for women. How do women gain success in the business world? Theyshould mix up male and female features. The variety of clothing alternatives forwomen is also greater than that available for men. Male administrators tend to judgewomen more favorably for a managerial post when the women display less“womanliness”, grooming shorter hair, slightly using make up and wearing plain clothing.
